Young man with coronavirus breaks quarantine to go to a discotheque and go to work in a hotel

Australian authorities in the state of Tasmania have reported that a man infected with the new coronavirus ignored instructions to isolate himself and went to a restaurant and nightclub, after which he also went to work at a large hotel the next day.

The student, who is in his 20s, had cold-like symptoms on 27 February, a day after he returned to Australia from Nepal via Singapore, Tasmanian public health director Mark Veitch said at a news conference. However, the man continued to work and visit his institute.

After his symptoms worsened, this Friday the young man went to a local medical center, where he was examined and instructed to remain in isolation while waiting for the results. However, that same night he went to a restaurant and a discotheque, while the next day he went to work at the hotel.

This Saturday afternoon, his coronavirus test came back positive. According to SBS News, this is the second case of coronavirus recorded in Tasmania.

It’s not clear why he didn’t follow the doctors’ recommendations, Veitch said. «We think he did understand the requirements [of isolation],» he said. It is unacceptable to continue activities in public or to attend work while waiting for the results of the coronavirus test,» he said.

Since returning from Nepal, he has worked a total of seven shifts at the hotel – some of which did not involve contact with customers – and has attended classes twice. He is currently in isolation in a hospital in Hobart City, Tasmania, in satisfactory condition. Four members of his family and three friends were also quarantined for two weeks.
